Right-clicking on the desktop brings up the \u00abEdit widgets\u00bb option, and you can place them wherever you like, resize them and organise them as you see fit.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Widgets automatically fade into the background when a window is active, so they never get in the way of your work. A simple click on the desktop makes them reappear. iPhone widgets can also be used on the Mac (via Continuity), which considerably extends the catalogue without developers needing to create a specific Mac version.<\/p>\n\n  <p>In practice, after two years of use, the most popular widgets are : Weather, Calendar, Reminders, Notes, World Clock and Battery. They transform an empty Mac desktop into a dashboard of useful information, especially for those who use a large screen or a <a href=\"\/en\/imac-vs-mac-mini-comparison\/\">iMac<\/a> with plenty of office space.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"economiseurs-ecran\">Video screen savers<\/h2>\n\n  <p>macOS Sonoma has borrowed its magnificent slow-motion video screensavers from Apple TV: overviews of landscapes, aerial views of world cities, underwater scenes and natural panoramas. These videos download automatically and start up after the set period of inactivity.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The transition animation between the screensaver and the desktop is particularly well done: the video fades to your real screen background, creating an effect of continuity. No more mixing work and personal searches.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The <strong>web applications<\/strong> (Web Apps) transform any site into a standalone application accessible from the Dock. Gmail, Notion, WhatsApp Web, or any web service becomes an \u00abapp\u00bb with its own window, its own icon in the Dock and its own space in Cmd+Tab. This is particularly useful for services that don't have a native Mac app, and it reduces resource consumption compared to an extra Safari tab.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Safari in Sonoma also offers a private browsing lock via Touch ID or password, and simplified password sharing with a family or trusted group. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/fr-be\/guide\/safari\/ibrw1069\/mac\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple documentation on Safari<\/a>, These features enhance safety while improving user comfort.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"mode-jeu\">Game mode<\/h2>\n\n  <p>Game Mode in macOS Sonoma allocates maximum CPU and GPU priority to the running game, while reducing latency for Bluetooth controllers (joysticks) and AirPods. It activates automatically when a game switches to full screen.<\/p>\n\n  <p>In practical terms, the performance gain is modest on Apple Silicon Macs, which already manage resource allocation well. The most notable improvement concerns Bluetooth audio latency (approximately halved), which makes the AirPods Pro more usable in games. Game Mode also noticeably reduces the latency of Xbox or PlayStation controllers.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Apple has also introduced the <strong>Game Porting Toolkit<\/strong> with Sonoma, a tool designed for developers to port Windows games to macOS more easily. Since then, the catalogue of compatible games has grown significantly, with ports of AAA titles that would have been unthinkable on the Mac just a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"videoconference\">Video calls and presentations<\/h2>\n\n  <p>Sonoma has added presentation effects for video calls (FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, Meet). Two modes stand out:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>Presenter Overlay :<\/strong> Your image appears in front of your shared presentation, like a TV presenter. You can move around the frame while your slides remain visible in the background. Two sizes are available: small (bubble in corner) and large (full frame with presentation in background).<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>Video reactions :<\/strong> Visual effects (hearts, confetti, fireworks, balloons, thumbs, rain, laser, stars) are activated by hand gestures in front of the camera. Two thumbs up triggers fireworks, a thumb down triggers rain, and so on. The bugs of the first versions (post-update WiFi problems, Spotlight slowness, widget crashes) have been resolved. The current version 14.7.x is considered to be the most successful of the Sonoma line.<\/p>\n\n  <p>In terms of performance, Sonoma shows no signs of slowing down compared to Ventura. The memory footprint is slightly higher (widgets consume a little extra RAM), but on Macs with 8GB or more, this is imperceptible. If your <a href=\"\/en\/slow-mac-solutions-optimization\/\">Mac is slow<\/a> under Sonoma, the problem is more likely to come from a full disk or greedy applications than from the system itself.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Apple is continuing to release security updates for Sonoma, in line with its policy of supporting the last two major versions of macOS. As long as Sequoia is the most recent version, Sonoma will receive security patches. If your Mac runs well under Sonoma and you don't need the new features, staying on Sonoma is perfectly reasonable until its security support ends.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Before any major update, create a backup <a href=\"\/en\/time-machine-mac-backup\/\">Time Machine<\/a> update. Web Apps do not have access to all the system features (limited notifications, no dedicated menu in the menu bar). The most notable improvement concerns the latency of Bluetooth accessories: controllers and AirPods respond significantly faster. If you're playing with wired headphones and a keyboard\/mouse, Game Mode makes little difference.
