On a Mac with 8 GB, go to 16 GB. Beyond that, 32 GB is only justified for demanding professional uses (video editing, virtualisation, databases). Apple has provided a dedicated access hatch - it's even one of the few operations Apple describes in its user manuals.<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Switch off<\/strong> the iMac and unplug the power cable. Wait 10 minutes (the internal components are hot).<\/li>\n<li>Put the iMac down <strong>face down<\/strong> on a thick towel to protect the screen.<\/li>\n<li>Press the <strong>release button<\/strong> just above the power port. The RAM cover opens.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the cover and locate the <strong>release levers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Pull the levers outwards to release the bars, then remove them. <strong>by pulling them straight<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Insert the new <strong>aligning the notch<\/strong> (it prevents reverse insertion), then push firmly until it clicks.<\/li>\n<li>Close the cover, reconnect and start.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>Check: Apple menu \u2192 About this Mac - the amount of memory displayed should correspond to the total installed. If the Mac beeps on start-up, remove the memory sticks and reinstall them, checking the alignment.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"installer-macbook\">Adding RAM to a MacBook Pro<\/h2>\n\n<p>Non-Retina MacBook Pros (2009-2012) allow RAM to be added via the bottom cover - the same hatch gives access to the hard drive, making it possible to perform a double RAM + SSD upgrade in a single operation.<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Switch off<\/strong> MacBook Pro and unplug the charger.<\/li>\n<li>Turn the MacBook over and remove the <strong>10 screws<\/strong> of the cover with a #00 Phillips screwdriver (remember the position of the longer screws).<\/li>\n<li>Lift the cover.
