Mac won't turn on: 7 effective solutions before repairs

Mac no longer switches on diagnostics in a Brussels repair workshop
In a nutshell: A Mac that no longer powers up is most often caused by a battery at the end of its life (around 40 % of the cases we receive in the workshop), a power supply or charger problem (25 %), or a fault on the motherboard (20 %). In most situations, a repair is possible without any loss of data. Diagnosis by a specialist takes less than 24 hours.

Why won't a Mac turn on?

When you press the Power button and nothing happens, it's rarely a good sign. But a Mac that won't turn on can hide very different causes depending on the model. After 15 years of repairs in our Berchem-Sainte-Agathe workshop, we've identified a fairly clear pattern.

Here are the most common causes, listed in order of probability:

Cause Frequency Gravity
Totally discharged or faulty battery Cycles exhausted, swelling, dead cells ~40 % Moderate
Faulty charger or cable MagSafe or USB-C damaged, false contact, power surge ~25 % Low
Motherboard failure Power supply circuit, SMC, T2 or Apple Silicon chip ~20 % High
Old or recent liquid damage Progressive oxidation, short circuit ~10 % Variable
Blocking software problem MacOS update failed, firmware corrupted ~5 % Low

An important detail to be aware of: on recent MacBooks equipped with Apple Silicon chips (M1, M2, M3, M4), the Power button also incorporates the Touch ID sensor. If the ribbon connector is damaged, the Mac may appear to be «dead» when the problem is purely mechanical. This is why a Mac that won't turn on always requires a precise diagnosis before considering a costly replacement.

What your Mac is trying to tell you

Before moving on to solutions, take 30 seconds to observe what happens (or doesn't happen) when you press the ignition button. These clues will directly guide the diagnosis when a Mac won't turn on.

Mac no longer lights up orange MagSafe LED on MacBook Pro
Observed symptom Probable diagnosis
No reactionNo sound, no light, no vibration Empty battery, dead charger or motherboard
The fan runs but the screen remains black Screen, backlight or graphics card layer
Start-up sound (bong) but black screen Display problem, no motherboard
MagSafe LED off (MacBook pre-2016) Faulty charger or dirty MagSafe port
LED MagSafe steady green with no load Battery disconnected or internal connector damaged
Loop restart (Apple logo, then shutdown) macOS corrupted, SSD failing, or RAM defective
Light grey screen with flashing «?» Boot disk not found (SSD down or disconnected)
Tip: connect an external screen (via HDMI, Thunderbolt or USB-C). If the image is displayed on the external screen, the problem is with the panel or the tablecloth, not the motherboard. It's a simple test that could save you an unnecessary trip.

7 solutions to try at home when your Mac won't turn on

Some of these operations may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of «dead» Macs you get in the workshop that restart after a simple keystroke. Test each solution in order.

1. Check the charger and cable

It is the most frequently underestimated cause when a Mac won't turn on. Try a other charger if possible (borrow one from a friend or family member or test it in an Apple Retail Store). On USB-C models, inspect the port: compacted dust can prevent contact. A wooden toothpick (never a metal one) can often be used to remove any residue.

2. Force a full charge cycle

If the battery is completely flat, the Mac may take a few hours to recharge. several minutes before reacting. Plug in the charger, wait at least 15 to 20 minutes and then try to switch it on. On certain Apple Silicon models, hold down the Power button for 10 seconds.

3. Reset SMC (Intel models only)

The SMC (System Management Controller) manages the power supply, fans and Power button. Resetting the SMC solves a number of problems on Intel Macs, which no longer switch on.

  • MacBook with non-removable battery (2009-2020) : turn off, hold Shift + Ctrl + Option + Power button for 10 seconds, release, then turn on again.
  • iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro : disconnect the power cable, wait 15 seconds, reconnect, wait 5 seconds, switch on.
Important information: Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) no longer have an SMC. Instead, hold down the Power button for 10 seconds, release, then press again as normal to switch on.

4. Reset NVRAM or PRAM (Intel models)

NVRAM stores settings such as boot disk and screen resolution. If this data is corrupted, the Mac may refuse to boot.

Turn on the Mac and immediately hold down Option + Cmd + P + R for 20 seconds. On Macs with the T2 chip (2018-2020), the Apple logo appears and disappears twice.

5. Starting up in safe mode

Le safe mode only loads the essential components of macOS. This is the ideal test to find out if the problem is software when your Mac won't turn on properly.

  • Intel : switch on and hold down the Shift key immediately.
  • Apple Silicon : hold down the Power button until you see «Startup Options», then select your drive by holding down Shift.

If the Mac starts up in Safe Mode, the problem is almost certainly software: an incompatible kext, a faulty system extension or a macOS update gone wrong.

6. Try DFU mode (Apple Silicon) or firmware restore

If your Apple Silicon Mac doesn't respond to anything, Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode lets you restore the firmware via a second Mac and a USB-C cable. This is the «last software resort» before considering hardware intervention. Apple details the procedure on their support page.

7. Disconnect the battery (pre-2016 MacBook with removable back)

On older MacBook Pro Unibody models (2009-2012), remove the base and physically disconnect the battery for 30 seconds forces a complete hardware reset. Reconnect, close, and try mains power. If the Mac starts up, it's often the battery that's at fault.

Please note: never attempt to open a MacBook Retina (2012 and later) without specialist tools. The Pentalobe screws and fragile covers make dismantling risky. You could aggravate the fault or lose your warranty.

Can I recover data from a Mac that won't turn on?

This is often the first question our customers ask when their Mac stops powering up, and rightly so. The good news is that in the vast majority of cases, the data is intact even if the Mac refuses to boot. The SSD works independently of the motherboard.

In concrete terms, here are the scenarios:

  • Battery or charger failure : No risk to data. The SSD is not affected.
  • Faulty motherboard (excluding soldered SSD) : extract the SSD and read it on an external device. Recovery is almost certain.
  • MacBook with soldered SSD (2016 and later) : the SSD is integrated into the motherboard. You need to repair the board or use data recovery to access memory chips.
  • Liquid damage with oxidation of the SSD : the most delicate case. The success rate depends on the extent of the damage, but files are recovered in around 85 % of cases.
Preventive advice: configure Time Machine on an external drive. It's the best insurance against data loss when a Mac stops powering up, and it's built into macOS for free.

When should you call in a professional?

If you've tried the 7 solutions above to no avail and your Mac still won't turn on, it's time to take your machine to a specialist. Here are the signals that should alert you:

  • The Mac does not react to no handling (no sound, no LEDs, no fan)
  • You feel a smell of burning or you notice any deformation of the chassis (swollen battery)
  • The Mac has undergone a contact with a liquid, even old
  • The screen lights up briefly and then goes off again and again
  • You have critical data not saved on this machine

In all these cases, avoid attempting any internal manipulations yourself. One wrong move on a cable or connector can turn a €150 repair into a €500 motherboard replacement.

Frequently asked questions

My MacBook won't turn on at all - is it dead?+

Not necessarily. In our experience, around 90 % of Macs that won't turn on are repairable. The cause is often a flat battery, a faulty charger or a component on the motherboard that can be replaced by micro-soldering. Only a full diagnosis will tell us what's wrong.

How much does it cost to repair a Mac that won't turn on?+

Diagnosis is free. The cost then varies according to the cause: from €45 for a simple charger to €690 for a complex motherboard repair. Replacing a battery, the most common cause of a Mac not powering up, costs between €140 and €280 (inc. VAT), including parts and labour.

Will my data be lost if my Mac stops powering up?+

In most cases, no. The SSD containing your files works independently of failed components. Data can be recovered in around 85 % situations, including when the motherboard is out of order. On recent models with soldered SSDs, the procedure is more technical but still possible.

How do I know if it's the battery or the motherboard?+

Connect your Mac to the mains and try to switch it on. If the Mac boots from the mains but not from the battery, it's probably the battery. If nothing happens even when plugged in, it's more likely to be the motherboard power circuit or the charger. A professional diagnosis can confirm this.

My Mac makes a fan noise but the screen stays black. What can I do?+

This symptom indicates that the motherboard is working but the display is faulty. Connect an external monitor to check. If the image appears on the external screen, the problem is with the LCD panel, the video strip or the backlight. See our page on Mac screen replacement.

Does the SMC reset work on a Mac M1, M2 or M3?+

No. Apple Silicon Macs no longer have SMC in the traditional sense. The equivalent is to hold down the Power button for 10 seconds, release, wait 5 seconds, then press again. If your Mac still won't turn on after this, DFU mode via a second Mac is the next step.

Do I need to make an appointment for a diagnosis?+

Yes, our Berchem-Sainte-Agathe workshop operates exclusively by appointment. This means we can guarantee you a dedicated time slot and immediate attention as soon as you arrive. You can also book online or contact us by telephone.

Do you repair old Macs (2010-2015) that no longer turn on?+

Absolutely. We have worked on all models since 2008, including those considered «obsolete» by Apple. MacBook Pros and iMacs from this period are often repairable at lower cost, thanks to components that are still available and a more accessible design.

My Mac leaked several weeks ago and won't turn on. Is it too late?+

It's not necessarily too late. Oxidation progresses over time, but Macs can still be saved weeks after liquid damage. Visit deoxidation by ultrasonic bath removes corrosion and often allows the machine to be restored to its original condition.

Do you offer a home repair or collection service?+

Yes, we offer four modes of intervention: workshop in Brussels, home assistance, collection and delivery by courier, and remote troubleshooting for software problems. Physical diagnosis is still recommended when the Mac stops turning on at all.
